The town, probably founded by the Latin populations, was snatched by the Romans from the Samnites in 291 BC by the consul Lucius Postumius Megello, who made it a Latin colony, where they moved about 20,000 individuals. After the battle of Canne (216 a.C.) there repaired the defeated consul Gaio Terenzio Varrone. During the second Punic war, in 208, there died the consul Marco Claudio Marcello, attacked by Hannibal during a reconnaissance.
