The context - Venosa

The small town was founded by Latins, who conquered the place defeating the Samnites in 291 BC, guided by Lucius Postumius Megellus, who made it a Roman colony where over 20.000 people moved. Following the battle of Canne (218 BC), the defeated consul Gaius Terenzius Varro found there its refuge. During the second Punic war, consul Marcus Claudius Marcellus died in Venosa, having been attacked by Hannibal.

is not merely a place: it is an avant-garde idea generated and nourished in an Italian province, quite far from huge capitals.
