The idea

Porta Coeli is a cultural reality in the Basilicata region, a private museum experience and Study Centre for Mediterranean Culture, located in the prestigious seventeenth-century “Palazzo Rapolla” in Venosa, a fascinating small town in southern Italy, renowned for its history and exquisite artistic vocation.
Porta Coeli is not merely a place: it is an avant-garde idea generated and nourished in an Italian province, quite far from huge capitals. It embraces the concept of cultural resistance against the most disturbing of today’s obstacles: nihilism and surrender.
Porta Coeli Art Gallery is rooted in these suggestions, conveyed with credibility and persistence by Don Mario Festa, the spiritual guide of the founders. The idea that art is not just a mere aesthetic exercise but also an instrument for growth and comparison is still valid, constantly allowing new opportunities of personal and professional development. As a non-profit reality, we guarantee equity and attention to social issues avoiding speculations.
Today, seven years after it was founded, Porta Coeli is a cultural collector promoting the finest quality cultural expressions. It works as International Art Gallery, Study Centre for Mediterranean Culture, Advanced Training Academy accredited by Public Institutions, Publishing House.
The advanced training activities carried out during the postgraduate Masters courses aim at professional requalification and are connected to humanistic promotion activities: international painting and sculpture exhibitions, publications, seminars, international collaborations.
Our inclination towards internationalization allows the formalization of important partnerships in Italy and abroad. As far as the production and promotion of contemporary art is concerned, relevant are our two stable and worthy agreements with Florence Biennale and the Doha art centre Souq Waqif (Qatar). The Sacred Art and popular piety section / laboratory, instead, is enriched by the precious collaboration of the orthodox monastic community of Lepanto (Greece), to study and valorise the Byzantine icons of the Cretan school.
Humanism as a chance for resistance. And it is not a resistance to progress or to the challenging times, but to the indolence of those European, Italian, Mediterranean people ignoring the humanistic and social root that nourishes our civilization and gives meaning to the concept of common good.
Art is comparison and its purpose is not the artefact, product or artwork, but the artists and their beneficiaries. Art and culture are not expedients for attracting applauses and arrogance: they are a way of life making individuals inclusive.

is not merely a place: it is an avant-garde idea generated and nourished in an Italian province, quite far from huge capitals.
