The Sant’Andrea’s cathedral in Venosa is one of the town's symbols. It was built around 1470 by the feudatory Pirro del Balzo into a medieval urban context lying on the remains of the ancient Roman city. The works ended in 1502 and the church was sanctified only in 1531. Inside, during the following decade, the church was filled with ornaments inspired to the renaissance artistic culture. Simple but large, the building features structural and decorative late-gothic elements which later have been integrated with renaissance influences. The church is divided into three naves modulated with pointed arches. All along the naves walls is a series of painting portraying the Apostles in full picture and drapery. They were most likely made by Giuseppe Pinto in the XVII century, according to the local historiography stating also that the two canvases on the left and right walls at the entrance were made by another painter from Venosa, Nicola Marangelli between XVII and XVIII century. The other two paintings probably made by Carlo Maratta (1625-1713) portray respectively, San Felice’s martyrdom on the right nave and the kneeled Virgin on the left, bowed head, in front of the flying angel. On the left nave there is also a fresco fragment by Simone da Firenze, the “Adoration of the Magi”, dating back to the XVI century ca. On the left of the altar there’s a panel dating back to the XIII century into a XIX century frame portraying the Madonna dell’Idria. The other paintings in the church are all by southern painters and were made between XVII and XIX century.
In the crypt Maria Donata Orsini rests, Pirro del Balzo’s wife that gave Venosa as a dowry to his husband in 1453.
