22nd May - 10th July 2016
Venosa (PZ) – On Sunday 22nd May 2016, from 7:00 pm, Porta Coeli International Art Gallery inaugurates Donato Faruolo’s exhibition titled “Un’indagine. Apologia dell’incompiuto”. Following a number of personal and group painting and sculpture exhibitions, the Gallery shifts to changes dedicating this solo exhibit to Donato Faruolo’s work.
During the opening, speeches by Tommaso Gammone - Mayor of Venosa, Aniello Ertico - Director of the Gallery, Giuseppe Potenza, philosopher and curator of the review will be held. Moderator will be journalist Eva Bonitatibus.
A new approach to contemporary art for Porta Coeli this time. Photography, but not in the common sense.
In Donato Faruolo, the artist and the graphic designer coexist and contaminate knowledge and capabilities in the research of meanings going beyond the aesthetic appearance of the objects. The artist, thus, researches on contents and explores different meanings by means of photography.
The exhibition project has two directions: the first on Nino Gennaro and his “Reduction to icon”, the second, titled “Pictures” focuses on the concept of image as a means of historic writing.
The themes of this research are divided into four sections: the first dedicated to Nino Gennaro with documents extrapolated from his archive and arranged by Faruolo in order to make them accessible without threatening their originality and freedom. Two videos by Giuseppe Zimmardi will be projected, describing Nino Gennaro, a peculiar intellectual character spanning poetry, dramaturgy, freedom of expression, a reference point for the multifaceted non-conventional culture for Palermo of his time.
The others are "Each", a collection of family pictures found in antiques markets in Palermo, from which emerge recomposed pieces of life; in the series “Either”, we find six framed diptychs with images conveying historic distortion of the institutuonal image. Last, the series “Everyone”, dedicated to photos downloaded from the Internet showing how individuals can lose their identity within a group. The themes enucleated through these means are a deep enquiry aiming at looking beyond the image and find the most hidden essence usually unseen. Contemporary art means research first of all, and Donato Faruolo’s exhibition is a brave example.
The exhibition will be on show until 10th July 2016.
is not merely a place: it is an avant-garde idea generated and nourished in an Italian province, quite far from huge capitals.
